American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine To Convene Panel to Establish Guidelines for Anti-Aging Product Market

In 1999, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, Inc. ("A4M") established the Consumer Education Resource Council. Its goal is to provide information on anti-aging products to members of the public so that they would not be mislead by false product claims and to allow consumers to know what to expect from anti-aging healthcare products. Recently, more attention has been given in the press and on Capitol Hill to the dubious claims by some who are marketing antiaging products. A4M supports the efforts of those who seek to expose fraudulent commercial activities but also believes that there are many legitimate and beneficial anti-aging products. A4M believes that the best way to protect the public from fraudulent claims is by educating consumers. A4M also believes that the anti-aging marketplace should begin to regulate itself.

Anti-aging medicine is a medical specialty founded on the application of advanced scientific and medical technology involving early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related diseases. It is a healthcare model promoting innovative science and research focused on ways to enhance and prolong the healthy lifespan of humans. As such, anti-aging medicine is based on principles of sound and responsible medical care that are consistent with those

applied in other preventive health specialties. A4M is a non-commercial, not-for-profit, all-volunteer society of physicians and scientists. Our society coordinates education and training programs for healthcare professionals internationally. A4M does not sell or endorse commercial products.

Indeed, the A4M is the world’s only professional organization dedicated to advancing research and clinical pursuits that enhance the quality and quantity of the human lifespan. From its humble beginnings eight years ago, the rosters of A4M now contain over ten thousand members from many nations.

As the leading anti-aging scientific organization worldwide, A4M believes it is time that the industry begins to regulate itself. To enable it to do so, A4M believes that ethical guidelines should be established for anti-aging product marketing. Accordingly, A4M is establishing a panel to consider and promulgate such guidelines. The committee will be composed of medical ethicists, physicians, scientists and business leaders. We invite all interested members who may wish to serve on the panel to apply.
