DHA Enhances Memory and Reaction Time

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported in March 2013 that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation supports memory and reaction time. Currently it is estimated that five to 20 percent of adults will develop mild cognitive impairment with aging, which is associated with an elevated risk of developing dementia.

The subjects included 176 healthy adults between 18-46 years of age with low intake of DHA. The subjects consumed 1.16 grams of DHA daily or placebo for six months. The researchers assessed cognitive performance including episodic and working memory, attention, reaction time of episodic and working memory and attention and processing speed. Also, the investigators evaluated apolipoprotein E genotype (APOE), which impacts cognition and is associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers determined that reaction time of episodic and working memory improved with DHA compared with placebo. Additionally, DHA improved episodic memory in women and reaction time of working memory in men. The investigators did not find an effect of APOE on cognitive function.

The researchers concluded, “DHA supplementation improved memory and the reaction time of memory in healthy, young adults whose habitual diets were low in DHA. The response was modulated by sex.”
