Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Reduce Kidney Toxicity from Mercury Exposure

A recently published study states that omega-3 fatty acid intake may decrease kidney damage from mercury exposure. Mercury is a naturally occurring element that is found in air, water and soil. High levels of mercury exposure can damage the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs and immune system.

The researchers evaluated 1,046 subjects aged 40 or older from the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The investigators assessed kidney function using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the occurrence of albumin (protein) in the urine (albuminuria). The investigators also measured levels of blood mercury and omega-3 fatty acids.

The researchers found that blood mercury levels were associated with GFR, and the association became more apparent after adjusting the data for omega-3 fatty acid levels. More specifically, after adjusting the data for omega-3 fatty acids levels, the subjects with the highest blood mercury levels had nearly three-times the risk of having a reduced GFR compared to the subjects with the lowest blood mercury levels. The investigators did not find an association between blood mercury levels and albuminuria.

The study authors stated, “In summary, this study demonstrates that mercury exposure is associated with increased odds of having lower GFR in the US population aged 40 or above. A statistical association with albuminuria was not apparent. We also observed that omega-3 fatty acid intake may play a preventive role in mercury-induced nephrotoxicity.
