Scientists have developed a genetic test that enables expectant parents to find out if their baby has any serious birth defects within 48 hours. The test, called Amnio-PCR, is carried out by extracting DNA from cells in the amniotic fluid and then analysing it by computer. The test, which can be carried out on women during the 12th and 34th week of pregnancy, is 100% effective in identifying defects according to the developers.
