Delegates at the world’s first symposium on blood and wine have been told that red wine could provide scientists with methods of treating AIDS, cancer, heart disease, and sleeping sickness, as well as rejuvenating the blood. The secret of red wine is thought to be its high levels of polyphenols, the drink has been shown to contain more than 200 phenolic compounds, often at levels ten-times higher than those found in white wine. In addition to red wines well-documented heart friendly benefits research has shown that resveratrols, a specific group of polyphenols, can reactive the manufacture of fetal blood, meaning they may be useful for treating diseases such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.
