Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention has published a study, possibly the first of its kind, stating that vaccination and cautious waiting are not the only recourse against HPV infection. The objective was to find a safe and effective therapeutic method of treatment for remedy of previously established cervical papillomavirus.

The study states that HPV is self-limiting and in 73.3% of the untreated placebo group it cleared on its own with 37 days. Researchers studied the effectiveness of 2 herbal interventions in women who were previously determined to have HPV, but conditions had not yet progressed to grade cervical neoplasias.

The 1st solution tested was a polyherbal vaginal cream containing extracts of reetha, aloe vera, cuccumin, and amla, known as Basant. The 2nd solution was a curcumin vaginal capsule. The other two groups received either placebo vaginal cream or placebo vaginal capsule. 287 participants were instructed to use one application of the assigned formulation every day for 30 days, with exception to during menstruation., they were all retested seven days after the last application. With findings that Basant had a clearance rate of 87.7%. Curcumin had a clearance rate of 81.3%. The combined placebo arms with 73.3%. Both herbal formulations had higher clearance rates, it was also noted that the placebo group also experienced a high clearance rate, from which according to researchers of this study suggests that the majority of HPV infections should clear as a result of a healthy immune system if it is doing its job correctly. Curcumin had been previously established as having an anti-cancer agent and has an established body of research in over 11 studies on over 100 different cancer cells types using this powerful turmeric polyphenol.
Lancet published a study in 2004 with similar results. Finding that low-rade squamous intra-epithelial cervical lesions linked to HPV infections spontaneously regress within 12 months in 61% of females, and within 36 months 91%.
European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology published another study in 2010 finding that after a year of follow-up the regression rate was 74%.
The Journal of Lower Genital Tract Diseases found at a year 70% of CIN 1, and 54% of CIN 2 lesions had spontaneously regressed.

Using the above findings the chances are in favor of HPV associated abnormal cell changes naturally regressing like most self-limiting viral infections. Vaccines are not soley responsible for protection done by our built in immunity, nor is the virus an inevitable lethal force that only a vaccination will deter and defend against. These findings can hopefully encourage individuals to recognize the power of natural plant allies and the human body to help live healthy lives, even with the possible threat of infection being constant.
