Keep Up, America: Therapeutic cloning vital to medical research

At one time, the idea of Americans going to South Korea for state-of-the-art medical treatment was unthinkable. But that was last month, before Korean scientists at Seoul National University made a breakthrough in therapeutic cloning. Their successful production of human embryonic stem cells through cloning is a big step toward treatment of Parkinson's, heart disease or spinal cord injuries.

At one time, the idea of Americans going to South Korea for state-of-the-art medical treatment was unthinkable. But that was last month, before Korean scientists at Seoul National University made a breakthrough in therapeutic cloning. Their successful production of human embryonic stem cells through cloning is a big step toward treatment of Parkinson's, heart disease or spinal cord injuries. Of course, American patients won't be flocking to South Korea soon, because clinical trials, much less treatments, still are years away. But the breakthrough gives medical researchers everywhere hope.
