Vitamin D Related to Extent and Complexity of Coronary Artery Disease

Vitamin D levels are related to the extent and complexity of coronary artery disease (CAD), according to a study published in December 2013. Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease and is the leading cause of death of both men and women in the U.S.
Researchers evaluated 209 subjects with stable CAD with an average age of 63.1 years and 102 healthy control subjects of similar age. The investigators measured levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP). The investigators also assessed blood pressure and body mass index (BMI). The subjects underwent coronary angiography to assess atherosclerotic plaque. The researchers then calculated the SYNTAX score, which is a tool to evaluate CAD complexity.
The investigators determined that the mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were lower among the subjects with CAD compared to the control group. The researchers found that among the subjects with CAD, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was associated with SYNTAX score, hypertension, CRP and BMI.
The study authors stated, “25-Hydroxyvitamin D level was associated with extent and complexity of CAD. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D may play a role in pathogenesis and severity of coronary atherosclerosis.”

A healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and good fats has been shown to protect the body from heart disease. The most common type of heart disease in the U.S. is coronary artery disease (CAD), which can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure, and arrhythmias.
