The Best Time To Take Blood Pressure Medication May Be At Bedtime

Those with high blood pressure who take their medications in one go at bedtime have been found to have better controlled blood pressure and a lower risk of death or illness caused by heart or blood vessel problems compared to those who take their meds in the morning according to a study published in the European Heart Journal. 

The Hygia Chronotherapy trial is the largest to examine the effects of the time during the day when patients take their anti-hypertensive medication on the risk of cardiovascular problems. In this study 19,084 patients were randomized to taking their medication at bedtime or when waking up, and they were followed for an average of 6 years or more during which their ambulatory blood pressure was checked over 48 hours at least once a year.
