New Study Reveals Where Americans Can Live the Healthiest in 2026

Collaborative, long-term planning is required to build these sustainable and equitable communities that support both health and lifespans of the residents.

An area can help Americans live the healthiest by creating safe, accessible, and supportive environments that promote physical activity, nutrition, and mental well-being. Key factors include access to nutritious food, walkable green spaces, safe housing, clean air/water, and quality healthcare, alongside strong social networks.

Key Requirements for a Healthy Area

  • Public Environment & Safety: Neighborhoods should have low crime rates, adequate lighting, sidewalks, and bike lanes to encourage physical activity.
  • Access to Nutrition & Resources: Easy access to affordable, fresh, and healthy food (farmers’ markets, grocery stores) is crucial to combat chronic diseases.
  • Environmental Quality: Clean air and water, reduced noise pollution, and green spaces are essential for reducing health risks.
  • Social & Economic Stability: Access to quality education, living-wage jobs, and affordable, safe housing directly correlates with better health outcomes.
  • Healthcare Accessibility: Readily available preventive services, screenings, and medical care.
  • Community Cohesion: Opportunities for social connection and engagement to improve mental health and reduce loneliness.

Collaborative, long-term planning that integrates these elements is required to build these sustainable and equitable communities that support both health and lifespans of Americans.

Where Americans Can Live the Healthiest in 2026

According to a December 2025 report on where Americans can live healthiest, California offers the best conditions for an active lifestyle. The study by the stem cell treatment center Auragens examined all 50 states based on factors like gym availability, air quality, and green spaces.

Key Highlights

  • California offers the best conditions for healthy living, combining clean air and access to over 5,100 fitness centers.
  • Colorado keeps medical costs low at $8,600 annually, while 81% of residents choose to follow healthier diets.
  • People in Massachusetts live longer than most Americans, with around 70% of the population doing regular exercise.

The research analyzed health statistics across America to measure which states give people the best conditions for healthy living. Each state received scores in multiple categories, including overall health conditions, daily habits like diet quality, access to gyms, air quality, healthcare costs, and the amount of natural green space. These factors were combined into one final score, where higher numbers mean better conditions for Americans maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Top 10 States for Starting a Healthy Lifestyle in 2026

A Closer Look at the Top 5

1. California

  • State Health Index: 65/100
  • Healthy Lifestyle and Behavior Score: 86/100
  • Forested Land Areas: 37%
  • Air Quality Index: 46/100
  • Healthcare Cost Per Capita: $10,299
  • Number of Health Clubs: 5,123

California is the best state for Americans starting a healthy lifestyle. The state offers more than 5,100 fitness centers, and locals are taking advantage of this, as 80% of them work out regularly. There is also a healthy eating culture across the state, with 86% of Californians saying they follow a nutritious diet. Most of the residents also refrain from excessive alcohol usage, and only 11% of them smoke.

2. Colorado

Colorado comes second for healthy living. More than 81% of residents eat nutritious diets (the highest rate), and most stay fit, with only 18% having inactive lifestyles. Healthy living is supported by wide access to fitness facilities, with nearly 900 gyms across the state. Colorado residents also benefit from affordable healthcare, spending only $8,600 per person, about $1,700 less than Californians.

3. Virginia

Next on the list is Virginia. With forests taking up 63% of the land area, most Virginians have natural spaces right where they live. All this greenery helps keep the air fresh as well, with the state scoring 46/100 in air quality, higher than most other regions. Virginia also has 1,144 gyms in total, so these Americans have plenty of indoor and outdoor options to stay active.

4. Idaho

Idaho takes fourth place in the active lifestyle rankings. 85% of residents follow nutritious diets, and around the same number do exercises on a regular basis. There is enough infrastructure for those who work out, plus plenty of forests (covering 41% of the state) for outdoor activities. Americans in Idaho also pay the lowest costs for healthcare, with a typical person spending around $8K on medical needs.

5. Washington

Washington rounds out the top five, with locals showing some of the healthiest eating habits in the nation. Most residents avoid smoking (only 14% do), and they stay in good physical shape too, with only 18% leading inactive lifestyles. Part of what keeps Americans so fit here is access to more than 900 gyms across the state, plus forests that cover 50% of the region, making it easier to stay active year-round.

Dr. Dan Briggs, President & CEO of Auragens, commented on the study:

“Americans are paying more and more attention to staying fit and healthy. Seven out of 10 now hit the gym every week, and more people are watching what they eat, counting proteins, and tracking their nutrition. With this shift toward health-consciousness, every state should be doing the bare minimum: ensuring clean air and green public spaces.”

Methodology

This January 2026 study by Auragens analyzed health statistics from across America to measure which states give people the best conditions for healthy living. Each state received scores in multiple categories, including overall health conditions, daily habits like diet quality, access to gyms, air quality, healthcare costs, and the amount of natural green space. These factors were combined into one final score, where higher numbers mean better conditions for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
