What Happens When the Brain Lacks Oxygen?

Knowing what the symptoms are if the brain runs out of oxygen allows one to catch the issue early, before serious problems arise.

The brain is the body’s control center, responsible for everything from feelings and memory to movement and breathing.

But as powerful as it is, the brain is very vulnerable and depends on a constant supply of oxygen to function optimally. When the supply of oxygen is cut off, even on a temporary basis, the brain starts sending out messages that something is amiss. These signals should never be ignored since prolonged deprivation of oxygen can cause permanent damage or even death.

Knowing what the symptoms are if the brain runs out of oxygen allows one to catch the issue early, before serious problems arise.

1. Confusion

Confusion is one of the earliest and most noticeable symptoms of brain oxygen deficiency. When the brain is starved of enough oxygen, the brain’s ability to carry out mental processes declines. This can cause a person to feel disoriented, struggle to focus, or experience difficulty understanding simple instructions.

In addition, confusion may appear suddenly so that a person does not know where he is or what he was doing. In severe cases, the person might not even recognize familiar faces and places.

Since confusion is often an early warning sign in the timeline for brain damage, recognizing it quickly is essential for seeking immediate medical attention and preventing further harm.

2. Dizziness

Dizziness is another common result of reduced oxygen to the brain. The brain relies on a continuous blood supply to establish equilibrium and spatial localization. When oxygen supply is low, the brain cannot process the messages from the inner ear and the visual system, thus leading to dizziness or spinning.

That said, dizziness can affect walking, standing, and even sitting upright. It can also make a person more susceptible to falling or having an accident, especially if unexpected.

3. Loss Of Coordination

As oxygen levels further decrease, the brain’s motor skills begin to deteriorate, which can result in loss of coordination. This can be in the form of clumsiness, difficulty in the performance of routine tasks, or poor coordination of movements.

Therefore, one is likely to trip when moving around, spill objects, or encounter difficulties with fine motor activities like writing or fastening a blouse. Loss of coordination is, in severe cases, accompanied by stroke symptoms and thereby renders it an emergency case.

4. Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath is both a symptom and a cause of brain oxygen deficiency.

When the body is unable to absorb sufficient oxygen, the brain notices the impact at once. In turn, the brain instructs the lungs and heart to force themselves to breathe, causing shallow or forced breathing.

This can be a vicious cycle in that the greater effort to breathe amounts to less oxygen absorbed. Shortness of breath is accompanied by anxiety, where one feels like they cannot breathe despite making every effort to do so.

If left untreated, this can lead to severe hypoxia, where the brain receives no oxygen.

5. Headache

Headaches are a symptom that might occur when the brain lacks oxygen. Oxygen is essential for the maintenance and operation of vessels in the brain.

In low amounts, vessels will dilate in preparation to transport more oxygen, leading to pressure and pain. Headaches can be a throbbing ache or even worse than a migraine, and they usually worsen with physical or mental exertion.

As opposed to common tension headaches, oxygen deficiency headaches can be preceded by warning signs like dizziness, confusion, or alteration in vision.

Take Away

The brain is an incredibly powerful instrument, but it needs oxygen to operate. If oxygen is low, the body responds with warning indications, such as disorientation, dizziness, loss of coordination, shortness of breath, and headache. They are not minor grievances; they are signals of emergency that the brain is under duress and needs to be addressed immediately.

Knowing these warning signs can be the difference between reversible and irreversible brain injury.

Below are some important points that summarize what happens when your brain lacks oxygen:

  • The brain requires a steady stream of oxygen in order to work—otherwise, damage happens right away.
  • The early warning signs include confusion, dizziness, and headache.
  • More severe symptoms may involve loss of coordination and shortness of breath.
  • Prompt medical attention can mean the difference between recovery and permanent brain injury.
