New government regulations mean that food manufacturers will be forced to state the amount of trans-fats a food contains on the product label. Trans-fats are found in all foods containing animal fats, and are particularly detrimental to health as they raise so-called `bad` LDL cholesterol levels. Speaking about the new requirement, which comes into effect in January 2006, at a news conference, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said: “Trans-fats are bad fats. The less trans-fat you and I eat, the healthier we will be.” Several manufacturers have already begun making trans-fat free margarines, crackers, and cookies.
