True Love: Is It Still A Thing?

Times may change, but some things remain the same, as 70% of Americans still believe that true love exists

Recent research took a look at whether or not people think true love is still real. Times may change, but some things remain the same, as 70% of Americans still believe that true love exists, at least according to a recent study conducted by Talker Research (formerly OnePoll U.S.) polling 2,000 general population Americans with a random double opt-in survey.

Belief in the concept of true love increases the more serious the relationship is that you may find yourself in. This analysis revealed that while 70% of the respondents believed in true love, this number rose significantly to 88% for those who are married as well as for those who are engaged.

Going through the motions

However, believing in the existence of true love drops to 79% for those who are in “serious” relationships. This means that 1 in 5 of those in “serious” relationships don’t think the person that they are currently with is “the one” or that it is true love.

This seems to be more common than you would think, being in a relationship just because people don’t want to be alone rather than being honest and stringing a person along.

Been there done that

People believing in “the one” or “true love” as a concept doesn’t strike a chord with everyone as much as it does with those who are in committed relationships. 64% of singles believe that the concept could be possible and are trying to keep their hearts and minds open. This number understandably drops again for those who are divorced, widowed, or separated with only 62% of them believing in the concept.

In it to win it

For those who are married and believe in the concept, 85% reported that they believe that their partner is their one true blue. Both women and men are absolute in their belief in the concept with 70% of both genders feeling that it is real.

You said what now?

But it’s not all rainbows and butterfly kisses, 10% of those who are married and believe in the concept said that they have experienced those strong feelings before, but it was not with their current partner.

Women respondents were less likely to believe that the person they were currently with was “the one”. Only 50% of women who believe in the concept believed that they were with “the one” compared to 58% of men who felt they were currently experiencing that strong bond.

Love and politics

74% of Democrats are most likely to believe in the concept compared to 71% of Republicans and 65% of Independents.

Love, eventually

21% of the respondents believe in the concept of that true strong connection but said that they have never experienced it.

Some people believe in the true forever connection, some people are with the person they believe is the one, and others are optimistically looking. But the quest to find true love is not exactly on the front burner for everyone, as demonstrated by only 30% of the respondents who are not currently with “the one” actively looking for the right person to fill the spot in their hearts.

What is love to you?

Everybody needs that connection, in some manner, some more than others, but the need is always there. Studies show that love or the feeling of being loved has positive effects, and negative effects have been shown in its absence leading to things such as depression and overeating among others.

It is not a single feeling, nor is it the same for everyone. It can be empowering, and it can be enraging all at the same time, it is all of the feelings, yes all of them.

It is that feeling of being cared for, respected, and wanted which is stronger than most would think, when it is withdrawn or lacking thereof a happy person can quickly change to being withdrawn. Never underestimate the power of touch and affection from a cherished one or the sadness that can be generated from lack of.

As far as relationship compatibility goes, without it you may never have a truly healthy relationship. It is like taking a leap and sacrificially giving yourself to another person and trusting them with your heart.

Love doesn’t always just happen, it can develop over time, and when you are not looking and least expect it. Love is not just a feeling it’s an action, it’s all the little things, it’s like an act of intention. Love is all-encompassing and is a verb.

Everyone needs love in some form, whether they realize it or not, even if it is the unconditional love from a dog.
