Nearly two-thirds of American adults now take a dietary supplement, and about 40% have been taking the same ones for more than five years, often without ever checking whether their body actually absorbs them.
In their July 2026 analysis, Ben’s Natural Health set out to find which everyday foods and drinks quietly work against the supplements people rely on. They looked at human studies to find which everyday foods and drinks can stop supplements from working properly, and how to time them better.
Their analysis found that everyday foods and drinks people assume are healthy or harmless — green tea, spinach, whole grains, even a glass of milk — can block much of the supplement taken alongside them. With 61% of US adults now taking a dietary supplement, that affects most of the population.
So, most people assume the supplement isn’t working and switch brands or up the dose, when the real fix is simply not taking it with the wrong food.
1. Green Tea and Matcha Could Be Washing Out Your Folate
Green tea and matcha may reduce how much folic acid your body absorbs, including from prenatal supplements. In one human trial, drinking green tea with folic acid cut peak folate levels by up to 39% and total absorption by up to 40%.
What to do: Take green tea or matcha at least two hours away from folic acid. If you take folate for pregnancy, ask your doctor about methylfolate, a pre-activated form that may be easier for the body to use.
2. Spinach Can Lock Up the Calcium You Just Swallowed
Spinach is healthy, but it contains oxalic acid, which can make minerals like calcium, iron and magnesium harder to absorb. In one study, people absorbed 27.6% of calcium from milk, but only 5.1% from spinach. The same issue may happen if you take calcium or magnesium supplements with a large serving of spinach.
What to do: Take calcium or magnesium supplements at a different time from spinach, chard, beet greens or rhubarb. Boiling these greens can also reduce oxalates.
3. Your “Healthy” Bran Bowl Blocks Iron and Zinc
Whole grains, bran, legumes, nuts and seeds contain phytic acid, which can make minerals like iron and zinc harder to absorb. Human studies show that phytate-rich meals can reduce mineral absorption, meaning a high-fibre breakfast may not be the best time to take these supplements.
What to do: Take iron or zinc away from bran-heavy, whole-grain or legume meals. Soaking, sprouting and fermenting foods can reduce phytates, while vitamin C can help boost iron absorption.
4. Your Morning Milk Is Working Against Your Iron Pill
Calcium can reduce how much iron your body absorbs, especially when taken at the same time. A glass of milk, yoghurt or calcium tablet can cut iron absorption by around half, so this is more about timing than avoiding dairy completely.
What to do: Keep iron and calcium at least two hours apart. For better absorption, take iron on an empty stomach with vitamin C, such as orange juice.
