Formula 1 drivers lose so much fluid during a single race that they need to drink nearly 8 bottles of water just to recover, an August 2026 report finds. A new study by Instant Hydration reveals the top 10 sports that dehydrate athletes the most.

The research examined major sports to find which ones cause athletes to lose the most fluids. For each sport, the study calculated how much fluid athletes sweat out during a standard session and how much they can realistically drink while competing. That second number varies a lot depending on the sport: a golfer can sip water between every shot, while a rugby player only gets a chance to drink at half-time. The gap between what athletes lose and what they can replace mid-competition determines the final ranking.

Formula 1 is the most dehydrating sport in the world. F1 drivers have to sit inside sealed cockpits where temperatures regularly exceed 50°C, causing them to sweat out nearly 3 litres of fluid. Unlike other sports, the problem is that drinking at the wheel is nearly impossible, so drivers only manage to replace about half a litre of what they lost. That leaves them 2.5 litres short, enough to affect reaction times and concentration before the race even ends. To fully recover, they need to drink close to 4 litres of water after leaving the car.
2. Rugby
Rugby is among the hardest sports on the body, and it is the second-most dehydrating sport for athletes. Players sweat out over 3 litres during an 80-minute match, but the only real chance to drink comes at half-time, which means most of that fluid stays unreplaced until the final whistle. As a result, players still finish the game with the same 3-litre deficit. That’s the kind of fluid loss that slows muscles down and clouds decision-making on the pitch. Recovering properly requires drinking over 4 litres, which is equivalent to 8 bottles of water.
3. Tennis
Tennis is also among the hardest sports on the body, registering the highest sweat rate. A standard match runs close to 2 hours, during which players sweat out over 3.6 litres in total. Changeovers give tennis players a regular chance to drink, but most manage to get through about 1.7 litres during the match itself. That still leaves a 2-litre deficit to close after walking off the court, and players need around 3 litres to get their bodies back to normal.
4. Cycling (Road Race)
Road cycling ranks fourth in sports for sweating, making athletes lose nearly 1.3 litres of fluid per hour. This means riders don’t sweat as fast as rugby players or tennis players, but a road race also lasts 4 hours. So by the finish line, cyclists have sweated out more than 5 litres of fluid, the highest total of any sport. With team car support, riders do manage to drink regularly during the race, and most take about 3 litres on the bike. Even so, they finish more than 2 litres short and need another 3 litres to recover.
5. Lacrosse
Lacrosse rounds out the top five sports as one of the most dehydrating team field sports. A 90-minute match makes players lose nearly 2.6 litres of fluid, but limited stoppages mean they only get to drink about 0.8 litres while the game is live. That leaves close to a 2-litre deficit by the time the final horn sounds, putting lacrosse ahead of sports like marathon running and triathlon on the dehydration scale despite being much shorter in duration. Players need to drink nearly 3 litres after the match to fully recover.
