Soothing Sea Salt Baths: Part Of Holistic Healing

Within holistic therapy, the positive effects of a sea salt bath can’t be understated to facilitating detoxification, contributing to muscle relaxation, improving blood circulation, lowering levels of inflammation, and calming the nervous system.

We accumulate a surprising amount of toxins in our bodies from the air we breathe, food we eat, and water we drink. This accumulation combines with pollution and radiation to cause stress which over time can lead to disease. Within holistic healing, the positive effects of a sea salt bath can’t be understated to facilitating detoxification, contributing to muscle relaxation, improving blood circulation, lowering levels of inflammation, and calming the nervous system.

Our skin is considered to be the largest organ in the human body. It covers us from head to toe acting as a protective barrier, regulating body temperature, sensing touch and pain, and producing vitamin D when exposed to light. Thus, it makes sense that a sea salt detox bath can not only help promote skin health but also promote overall health.

In a sea salt detox bath, the skin acts as the primary pathway for the removal of toxins by absorbing the ingredients added to the water to draw out impurities while promoting skin health by balancing pH levels and reducing inflammation.

Detoxification of the body is important, especially for those who eat a lot of meat or processed foods that contain chemically additive compounds that can accumulate in the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system, which are the main systems involved in processing toxins. A sea salt detox bath can help these vital organs eliminate these toxins and reduce their load, making it an important component of holistic therapy to ensure effective detoxification and support integral health.

Options for the types of sea salt that can be used in full or in foot baths can vary. Some people swear by Epsom salts, while other people prefer a blend of sea salts. Himalayan salt is valued for its rich mineral content as well as its relaxing and detoxifying effects. Natural, unrefined, and non-iodized sea salt contains potent purifying properties and essential minerals.

It is a matter of preference, but Epsom salt baths could lead to dehydration, skin irritation, and questionable magnesium absorption. Alternatively, sea salt baths are more versatile when it comes to healing, offering a blend of minerals that contribute to skin health, hydration, as well as relief from certain skin conditions.

Home Remedy

Most people forget, that a few decades ago, although it is not considered to be a cure, taking a sea salt bath was recommended when a person was sick or not feeling well to help relieve muscle aches, ease congestion, promote relaxation, sleep, and reduce inflammation due to the mineral content. Some research suggests that sea salt baths may even help to shorten the duration of a cold. While there is limited evidence to definitively prove its effectiveness against illness, it is generally considered a soothing home remedy that may help alleviate some symptoms like aches and pains associated with a cold or flu.

Detox Bath

For effective detoxification, take a full bath, immersing your entire body in the sea salt water as often as you feel comfortable. If your chest is not submerged, apply a towel that has been moistened in the bath water to help facilitate the detoxification process.

Here’s an example of a recipe and protocol for a sea salt detox bath:

2 cups of sea salt

2 cups of sodium bicarbonate (natural vegan baking soda)

1 cup of borax

Optional: essential oils such as rosemary, lavender or eucalyptus to enhance relaxation from the added benefit of aromatherapy

Place the ingredients in a tub of hot water, and soak in it for 20 minutes or longer. While soaking, make sure to stay hydrated, and go over your body with a sponge or loofah. Do not drink the bath water or ingest the ingredients. After the bath, use your favorite lotion or perhaps an oil with coconut oil, and make sure to keep your body well hydrated.
