There certainly is no shortage of products available on the market that claim to hold the key to sexual performance and satisfaction, now a new study suggests that the answer may be nuts.
Universitat Rovira i Virgili and the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute have found that eating 60 grams of certain nuts every day may help to improve sexual function in men who follow a typical Western diet.
Conducted as part of the larger FERTINUTS Project that found regular consumption of certain nuts improved semen quality, this study involved 83 healthy men aged 18-35 who followed a diet high in animal fat but low in fruits and vegetables.
Participants were divided into 2 groups: one group that followed their typical diet, and the other that incorporated 60 grams of almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts in their meals for 14 weeks, then all participants filled out questionnaires on recent sexual experiences with questions contained in the validated International Index of Erectile Function, and peripheral levels of nitric oxide and E-selectin were measured.
“Our study suggests that compliance with a healthy diet supplemented with mixed nuts may help to improve erectile and sexual desire,” the authors write.
As published in the journal Nutrients results suggest that adding almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts to the diet improves sexual satisfaction among men; but it was noted that additional research is needed to confirm their findings, and to determine exactly how nuts influence men’s sexual performance.
