According to a February 2026 report on caffeine addiction across America, Hawaii is the most caffeine-dependent state in the nation. The study by Instant Hydration analyzed consumption across all 50 states to determine where Americans get the most caffeine.

Final scores were based on daily intake, local caffeine-related search trends, and the number of cafes per resident. To keep the comparison fair, shop density and search data were measured per 100K individuals to identify where coffee culture and caffeine dependency are most common.

      Hawaii is the most caffeine-addicted state in the US, as locals drink nearly 3 cups of coffee every day. Despite paying an average of $4.67 per cup, which is the second-highest price among the top ten, Hawaiians’ appetite for caffeine remains high. With 41 coffee shops available per 100K residents, they have plenty of opportunities to grab their favorite drinks, especially espresso and matcha.

      2. Washington

        Washington ranks second, where residents drink over 2 cups of coffee a day. No other state shows more online interest in caffeine, as 5.3 million locals are looking for the related content. The state’s favorite drink is espresso, even with a high average price tag of $4.44.

        3. Oregon

          Oregon comes next, matching Washington with 2.3 cups of coffee daily. Locals have no shortage of options, as over 24 shops per capita are nearby, making it easy to grab a cup anytime. At $4.05 per drink, Oregon has some of the cheapest coffee in the country, which helps explain why people search for caffeine-related terms nearly 2.78 million times a year.

          4. Alaska

            Alaska is fourth, where residents drink 2.6 cups a day, falling behind only Hawaii. While coffee in Alaska is the most expensive in the country at $4.73, these high costs haven’t slowed down local drinking habits. With 13 cafes accessible per 100K people, espresso remains the favorite way to stay caffeinated throughout the day.

            5. Vermont

              Vermont rounds out the top five, with residents drinking 2 cups of coffee. Locals here enjoy the lowest price in the top 10, costing just $3.62 a cup. People love their espresso, and thanks to the low prices, they have no trouble visiting the 21 coffee shops available per capita.
