Type 2 diabetes and obesity have now become a growing global concern in the past few decades. Contributing factors to these conditions are linked to increased blood sugar levels which can damage blood vessels that transport blood to vital organs and can elevate the risks of developing cardiovascular disease and risk of stroke.
Studies conducted in the past show that introducing ketones into the bloodstream could lower blood sugar levels, this study supports those findings suggesting that consumption of ketone ester supplements can provide the same benefits, according to researchers at the University of British Columbia and University of Oxford, as they have determined that consumption of the supplements may facilitate better control of blood sugar by decreasing sugar spikes.
This study was conducted including 20 healthy individuals as participants. All of the participants were instructed to either consume a ketone monoester supplement or a placebo on 2 occasions after a 10 hour fasting period. After an additional 30 minutes all participants were asked to consume a beverage that contained 75 grams of sugar. During a 2.5 hour study period blood samples were collected from the participants every 15-30 minutes to be analyzed for lipids, hormones, and glucose levels, with results showing a decrease in the blood sugar spikes for individuals who had be given the keone drink.
To lessen the confounding influence of medications, insulin resistance, and beta-cell dysfunction all of the participants were young healthy individuals. As a result of the limitations more research is required to ascertain if these results can be applied to individuals suffering from obesity, type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and other conditions.
