French Parliament Pushes for Cloning Ban
Draft legislation banning human cloning has been passed by France’s lower house of parliament. The upper house is due to vote on the legislation in February 2004, and if they also back the new laws the ban on cloning will be enforced shortly afterwards. The draft legislation will make reproductive cloning of human cells a crime punishable by 30 years in jail and a 7.5 million euro ($9 million) fine. It will also ban cloning for therapeutic purposes, thus outlawing the creation of stem cells for medical research and some techniques used in embryo research.
