Universities of Dankook and Wooksuk scientists have found a compound in Damask Rose can target the aging process, as published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.

Anti aging properties of damaurone D derived from Damask rose was investigated using model Caenorhabditis elegans; effects of DaD on longevity were examined using a lifespan essay; expression levels for biomarkers for proteins were determined using fluorescence intensity of transgenic mutants; and DaD target genes were assessed using genetic studies of single gene knockout mutants.

DaD treatments were noted to improve lifespans of C.elegans by 16.7% under normal conditions; stress endurance under thermal, osmotic, as well as oxidative stress conditions were improved based on stress tests; food intake, body length, lipofuscin accumulation, and age dependent decline of motor ability of C.elegans were also improved.

The antioxidant capacity of DaD and its effect on stress response proteins could explain its longevity promoting effects, according to the researchers. The team concluded that DaD contains longevity benefits and could be developed into nutraceuticals that target aging and related diseases.
