Avoid These Bedroom Design Mistakes For Better Sleep Quality

In recent years, many people have come to realize the impact of their room design on their sleep quality, and in a research published on MDPI, 70 percent of participants said that they would like to make changes to their bedroom for comfort and better sleep. 

It’s undeniable that people sleep better when their bedroom is optimized for comfort, temperature, and noise and light levels. Avoiding certain interior design mistakes can help to improve your overall sleep quality, so learn how to set up your bedroom to get a good night’s sleep. 

Having the Wrong Kind of Mattress

Having an uncomfortable mattress can result in sleepless nights. A sleeping surface that’s too thin or lumpy, or one that doesn’t support proper spine alignment can result in aches and pains and prevent you from falling asleep. There are tons of mattress options in the market, so choosing the best one can be a challenge.

However, research suggests that a medium-firm mattress, particularly one with adjustable firmness controls, is the best for promoting spine alignment and sleep comfort and quality. When shopping for a new mattress, head out and try them out in person to see which one you like the most. See to it that you spend at least 10 to 15 minutes lying down on the mattress in your usual sleep position to determine if it’s the right one for you.  

For those of us who have multi-use spaces, think about having customized furniture to improve your sleep quality. For instance, if you use your living room as a bedroom and workstation, you’ll need versatile furniture, such as a sofa bed. Some conventional sleeper sofas can be quite uncomfortable, so it might be better to create and design a custom sofa bed that not only enhances the look of your space but also provides comfort and support for better sleep. 

Too Many Knick Knacks and Decorative Items in Your Bedroom

Your bedroom is a personal space, and while you can certainly fill it with your favorite knick-knacks and decorative items, it can make your sleeping space look disorganized and cluttered. Too much clutter in your bedroom not only downgrades its aesthetic, but it may even cause you to have sleep issues.

In fact, a study has found that people who were messy and at risk of having a hoarding disorder also had more trouble sleeping at night than those who kept a tidy environment. What’s more, having too many things and clutter in your bedroom can be stressful, and feeling stressed can lead to sleep problems. 

To have a restful environment, tidy up your bedroom every day to keep it free from clutter. Keep items hidden in drawers or closets, and see to it that your floors, bed, and other surfaces are clear of clothing and knick-knacks. Add proper storage to keep your belongings neatly contained.

Next, opt for a minimalist feel for your room by going easy with the decorations, and only display items that enhance the look of your space. To add a sense of calm and relaxation, decorate with a single potted plant such as a money tree or a peace lily. These plants will clean and refresh your indoor air while adding positive energy to your bedroom.

Bright and Stimulating Paint Colors

It’s fun to experiment with paint colors to refresh the look of your bedroom, but did you know that certain hues can keep you from getting a good night’s sleep? Vibrant shades of red, orange, green, and yellow can be too stimulating, so avoid these colors at all cost when repainting your bedroom.

Instead, choose soft blues, which are associated with calm and relaxation. Neutrals like beige, cream, or taupe can have a soothing effect on the mind, so they’re perfect choices for paint and decor colors. If you want a cozy vibe for your room, try dark shades of purple, gray, or green. 

Your bedroom decor can impact your sleep quality. Choose a good mattress, decorate minimally, and pick the right paint colors to have better sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed every day.
