Refers to programmed cell death is a form of cell death in which a programmed sequence of events leads to the destruction of cells without releasing harmful substances into the surrounding area. Apoptosis plays an important role in health by eliminating aged cells, unnecessary cells, and unhealthy cells. A protein called bcl-2 prevents apoptosis in normal healthy cells. However, many cancer cells, which would normally be destroyed by apoptosis because they proliferate too quickly, produce high levels of bcl-2 in order to evade destruction.
