Anyone looking for a good skin cream with anti-aging properties knows that the market is not short on products claiming to be “the one”. However, the majority of these don’t live up to their claims. Amidst the arena for the high demand of effective anti-aging skincare and cosmetics, new players have stepped onto the stage and are putting their product to the clinical test.
The double-blind, split-face study published in the Journal of Dermatologic Science and Cosmetic Technology describes assessing the clinical effectiveness of a 0.1% pterostibene-containing skincare emulsion against a control emulsion with 31 participants over a period of 28 days.
The study compared the left and right sides of participants’ faces using advanced instruments, finding that the cream helped to improve skin firmness, elasticity, and wrinkle reduction compared to the control group. This suggests that the natural ingredient could become very popular in cosmetic formulations.
“Our results indicated that the pterostilbene emulsion remarkably improved skin elasticity, firmness, and reduced wrinkles, such as forehead, undereye, and Crow’s feet wrinkles, shares co-author Zhiyuan Chen, Founder of Guangzhou Luanying Cosmetics Co., Ltd. “It also increased the thickness of the epidermis layer, enhanced collagen and elastic fibers, and minimized skin pores.”
Superior anti-aging efficacy
According to the researchers, when compared to the control group, those in the pterostilbene emulsion group experienced statistically significant improvements, with all of the participants expressing higher satisfaction than the treatment group. When taken together, the results demonstrate the superior anti-aging efficacy of pterostilbene emulsion through multiple mechanisms, which support its use as an active ingredient in skincare and cosmetics.
“It also offers a new perspective on natural compounds’ applications in the skincare industry,” says corresponding author Xueping Chen. “The significant improvements in various skin parameters and the subjects’ positive feedback highlight the effectiveness of pterostilbene, which may change the way we approach anti-ageing skincare formulations.”
However, you won’t be seeing this anti-aging pterostilbene emulsion formulation hit the shelves anytime soon. The researchers suggest that a longer study period is required to fully understand the impact of the pterostilbene emulsion in a larger and more diverse group of participants.
Anti-aging skin care
In the meantime, to prevent and reduce signs of aging, protect your skin from the sun daily with SPF 30+ sunscreen, use gentle cleansers and moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, incorporate targeted treatments like retinoids (retinol) and vitamin C serums, and exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells. Lifestyle factors, including a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol, also significantly contribute to maintaining youthful-looking skin.
As we age, our natural collagen production declines significantly, leading to signs of aging such as wrinkles, joint pain, and decreased skin elasticity. The importance of collagen can’t be overstated, as this decline underscores the necessity of incorporating collagen-rich foods or supplements into your diet to support your body’s needs effectively.
Skincare Routine Essentials
- Sun Protection is Key: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning and reapply as needed, even on cloudy days.
- Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, hydrating cleanser to wash away dirt and oil without stripping your skin’s natural moisture.
- Daily Moisturizing: Apply moisturizer daily to keep skin hydrated, smooth and prevent fine lines from appearing more prominent.
- Targeted Serums: Use serums with ingredients like vitamin C to brighten skin and fight free radicals, and retinoids (like retinol) to promote cell turnover and boost collagen production.
- Regular Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate a few times a week to remove dead skin cells, improve texture, and help other products penetrate better.
Lifestyle Factors for Youthful Skin
- Healthy Diet: Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats to support skin health.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.
- Adequate Sleep: Get enough sleep to allow your body and skin to refresh and renew.
- Avoid Smoking: Smoking accelerates skin aging, leading to premature wrinkles and loss of firmness.
- Limit Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute to accelerated skin aging.
Other Tips
- Be Gentle: Handle your skin gently to avoid irritation and damage.
- Don’t Forget Your Eyes: The delicate skin around your eyes needs special attention; consider a targeted eye cream.
- Consult a Dermatologist: Regular visits to a dermatologist can help you address specific skin concerns and create a personalized anti-aging plan.
Not every solution needs to come from a carefully crafted bottle on the shelf; there are many forgotten natural skincare habits that deserve to make a comeback. This natural approach isn’t about going backwards; it is about returning to a pace that your body understands. This includes lymphatic drainage, cold water cleansing and toning, pillow care/hygiene, and experimenting with natural ingredients to create a personalized at-home skincare blend, among other natural skincare methods that may be what your skin is craving.
