America’s Unhealthiest Fast Food Items: You Could Be Eating Over 6K Calories in One Meal

New data has discovered the most calorific menu items from the most popular fast food restaurants in the US, with Hardee’s having the unhealthiest food item.

Have you ever noticed how much more tempting it is to pick up fast food for dinner after being stuck in traffic? Well, it’s not just you; research shows that traffic delays significantly increase visits to fast food restaurants, leading to unhealthier eating for millions each year.

Considering every major city has both traffic and fast food restaurants lining highway feeder roads, it is not surprising at all that there is a slow traffic-fast food link contributing to the likelihood that residents will develop chronic diseases such as heart disease and certain types of cancers.

Fast food meals can contribute to the development of chronic diseases due to their high content of calories, unhealthy fats, sugar, and sodium. Frequent consumption of fast food has been linked to an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, digestive issues, metabolic syndrome, NAFLD, and other health issues, including premature death.

Yes, fast food is a common option, but it’s high in calories and low in nutrients. Eating too much could affect nearly all parts of your body. Here’s why:

  • High in calories and unhealthy fats: Fast food often contains high levels of saturated and trans fats, which can raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • High in sugar and refined carbohydrates: Many fast food items are high in sugar and refined carbohydrates, which can lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Low in essential nutrients: Fast food meals are often low in essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which are important for overall health and disease prevention.
  • Contributes to obesity: The high-calorie content and low nutritional value of fast food can lead to weight gain and obesity, a major risk factor for many chronic diseases.
  • May lead to other health issues: Fast food consumption has also been linked to respiratory issues, high blood pressure, skin problems, tooth decay, and even depression, anxiety, as well as a decline in cognitive function.

How Unhealthy Are Your Favorite Fast Food Items?

Quick Highlights:

  • Hardee’s tops the list for the unhealthiest item, with 6,490 calories
  • McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC didn’t make the top ten despite being three of the most popular fast-food restaurants

Vibration fitness experts analyzed the nutritional value of items from 47 of the most popular fast-food restaurants in the US and ranked these to discover the most calorific item from each restaurant. This excluded sharing, meal, combo, catering, and family items.

The analysis revealed that Hardee’s Fried Chicken 12 Piece and 6 Biscuits tops the list as the unhealthiest fast-food item, with an eye-watering 6,490 calories. Founded in 1960, Hardee’s is a staple of the American fast-food world known for its thick burgers, hand-breaded chicken tenders, and indulgent breakfast offerings.

Taking second place is Papa John’s Philly Cheesesteak XL Stuffed Crust, with 4,590 calories. Now one of the largest pizza delivery restaurant chains in the States, Papa John’s has quickly become a go-to pizza restaurant around the world, too. As well as pizza, Papa John’s offers a variety of options, such as sides like garlic knots and chicken wings.

Third in the rankings is Moe’s Nachos, which could have up to 4,334 calories if you add all the possible toppings. This fast-casual restaurant chain is famous for its fresh and customizable Tex-Mex cuisine, its unique flavor combinations, and its signature queso dip.

Little Caesars’ Detroit Style 5 Meat Feast Deep Dish Specialty Pizza takes fourth place, with 3,500 calories. The global pizza chain has become renowned for its affordable, convenient, and delicious “Hot-N-Ready” pizzas, which are readily available for immediate pickup without the need for ordering in advance.

Taking the fifth spot is Pizza Hut’s Loaded Pepperoni Feast Large Cheesy Bites Pizza, with 3,153 calories. Pizza Hut is an Italian-American favorite around the world, as well as in the US. Many flock to the restaurant for its signature stuffed-crust pizzas.

Sixth place goes to Buffalo Wild Wings’ 30 Count Traditional Wings (Drums Only), with 2,240 calories. This fun and lively restaurant offers a sporty vibe for those wanting to combine their dining experience with sports viewing. In terms of food, Buffalo Wild Wings offers a wide selection of chicken wings served with a variety of sauces and seasonings for the wings fans out there.

In the seventh spot is Jimmy John’s The J.J. Gargantuan, with 2,160 calories. Jimmy John’s prides itself on its ‘Freaky Fast’ delivery and commitment to using only the finest ingredients to create its famously fresh subs.

Checkers and Rally’s 20 Piece Garlic Parmesan Classic Wings take eighth place, with 2,040 calories. Originally separate companies serving different geographic areas, Checkers and Rally’s merged in 1999. The drive-thru restaurants specialize in hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, and milkshakes.

Seizing the penultimate place in the rankings is Culver’s 3-piece Northwoods Walleye Dinner, with 1,930 calories. This popular fast-food restaurant provides a unique dining experience rooted in Midwestern hospitality and comfort food favorites, including its ButterBurgers, frozen custard, and Wisconsin cheese curds.

Concluding the list is Shake Shack’s Double Down Fries, in tenth place, with 1,910 calories. Originating as a humble hot dog cart in New York City, Shake Shack has grown into a global brand known for its high-quality burgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes.

Gabriel Ettenson, MSPT, Chief Medical Officer of Hypervibe, commented on the findings:

“America is famous for its fast-food culture, with many chains exclusive to the nation, such as In-N-Out Burger and Waffle House, further cementing its status as a fast-food capital. However, while they can be an affordable and quick meal to grab, they’re known to be unhealthy – but do Americans know exactly how many calories they are consuming in just one meal?

“Most adults require between 1,600 to 3,000 calories a day, depending on factors such as age, gender, and exercise frequency. Exceeding this regularly can not only contribute to weight gain, but it can also lead to heartburn, fatigue, and metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes by putting too much strain on the pancreas. So, if fast food is something you eat frequently, it’s important to consider the effect this can have on your body.

“With that being said, enjoying a fast-food meal every so often can have its benefits – for example, those on diets can take a break from strict eating as it maintains motivation and prevents quitting healthy eating altogether. The occasional fast-food meal isn’t going to ruin any progress if you’re regularly consuming nutrients, like protein and fiber – so, if you generally have a balanced diet, there’s no need to feel guilty.”

Methodology

The study collated a list of 47 of the most popular fast-food restaurants in the US and examined the calorie content of each item on each restaurant’s menu.

The most calorific item from each restaurant was found, and a ranking was produced to find the unhealthiest items.

This excluded sharing, family, combo, meal, catering items, and drinks in gallons.
