Sleeping less than 5 hours a day, as well as 9 or more hours a day, associates with poor physical and mental health.

While most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night to feel their best the next day, it is estimated that as many as 30% of American adults may fail to get sufficient sleep. Jae-Hyun Kim, from Yonsei University (South Korea), and colleagues examined the relationship between sleep duration and self-rated health in Korean adults The team used data collected on 15,252 participants in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV. Results showed that short sleep duration of 5 hours or less per day and long sleep duration of 9 hours or more per day associated with poor self-rated health.
