SOUTH BEND — New American Heart Association guidelines will help ensure that women receive the best preventive treatments against heart disease, the No. 1 killer of both women and men in the United States, Dr. Ronald Nelson said.The guidelines, released Wednesday, give doctors a standard way of assessing an individual woman’s relative risk of heart disease and recommends different medication strategies for each risk group.Nelson, a cardiologist in South Bend, said the guidelines are valuable because they take into account the most recent studies of heart disease in women from around the world.
