Witch hazel probably isn’t the most common herb in any home, but it has a number of benefits including a role as an anti-inflammatory compound, astringent, reduces infections, speeds healing, eliminates hemorrhoids, soothing pain, settling upset stomachs, protecting skin and hair, among many others.

 

Witch hazel is derived from the witch hazel shrub known as Hamamelis virginiana which is a powerful compound that has been used for thousand of years in traditional medicines. Various parts of the plant can be made into decoction and applied to various body parts for relief. Witch hazel has proven potency which is why it has become part of various different commercial and medical products. It’s unique organic composition make it valuable, especially as an astringent.

High levels of eugenol, tannis, carvacrol, flavonoids, and other volatile powerful components can have strong effects on the body according to traditional claims but have yet to be thoroughly researched fully. Most traditional practitioners suggest diluting it with water or a lesser carrier oil such as virgin olive oil due to its strength, it will still have an effect but there will be lower chances of skin irritation. For years commercial use of witch hazel was limited to skin conditions, but many health benefits have been discovered, making it worthy of having in health arsenals.

 

Witch hazel is famously great for skin helping to clear up boils, psoriasis, acne, cracked skin, rashes, pimples, inflammation, bug bites, hives, and protecting wounds from infection while promoting healing.

Mixed with olive oil, the tannins and antioxidants within it make an effective topical medicine that can be used on inflammation associated with arthritis, sore muscle and joints that may also be caused by injury, age, or exercise.

 

Witch hazel astringent properties can work wonders on headaches when applied topically to the temples, which eases tension of small capillaries which are often the cause of headaches. It can also be brewed in a cup of tea to also ease blood pressure and relax throbbing blood vessels or muscles which may be causing discomfort.

 

Witch hazel is also a great stomach tonic, only tiny amounts are needs to work adequately, it is most effective when mixed with mint or chamomile, which is known to clear up symptoms of diarrhea, IBS, and dysentery by stimulating the immune system and reduce inflammation caused by bacteria in the gut.

 

Women who suffer from heavy menstrual cycles can count on the astringent properties of witch hazel to slow down bleeding that occurs and reduce pain and inflammation in the groin, while helping to decrease bloating and cramps. Depending personal medical conditions it is recommended to speak with your gynecologist before adding the herb to health regimens.

As a word of caution only tiny amounts of witch hazel are required for effectiveness, especially in cases of oral consumption in which excess can cause rash, nausea, or dizziness. Topical application is only needed in moderation mixed with water or another lesser carrier oil such as virgin olive oil at a ratio of 50:50 for best results.
