It goes without saying that having a strong immune system is important because of the role it plays in protecting the body against disease and infection. When the immune system is functioning properly it can identify bacteria, viruses and other pathogens while distinguishing them from our own cells.

Unfortunately the immune system can become compromised for a variety of reasons including poor nutrition and overall health. A weakened immune system can aggravate ailments which would normally be harmless such as allergies, headaches, and the common cold along with increasing the risk of more severe conditions such as influenza, pneumonia, HIV, and AIDS.

There are many immune boosting foods that you can incorporate into your diet that can aid your body’s immune system functions. Fruits and vegetables are excellent choices loaded with essential nutrients and anti-aging antioxidants that play important roles in various body functions including metabolism, digestion, and respiration.

Garlic contains compounds with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties such as alliin and allicin. Garlic is commonly used to treat the symptoms of  toothache, coughs, snake bite, constipation, hypertension, and much more.

Ginger is one of the more popular choices to help treat nausea, diarrhea, and stomach aches. It is a rich source of potassium, copper, iron, niacin, vitamin C, phosphorus, magnesium and manganese as well as other bioactive components with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Blueberries pack a powerful antioxidant punch which can help to strengthen the immune system, aid in digestion, and help to prevent cellular damage that is caused by harmful free radicals among other benefits.

Citrus fruits are loaded with antioxidants as well as the essential vitamin C which helps to boost the immune system by stimulating production of white blood cells that fight off viruses and bacteria.

Spinach will help keep you strong and fortify the immune system with its high iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C content which will also help to fight off infection and disease.

Turmeric has been used as a natural remedy for centuries in Ayurveda medicine to fight off the common cold and flu. Turmeric/curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help to boost immune responses.

Almonds possess immune boosting properties that also help to promote healthy skin and delay onset of chronic disease that are caused by free radicals.

Sunflower seeds are a great source of antioxidants that help to support the immune system, promote eye health, and lower the risk of coronary heart disease.

Dark chocolate is another source of antioxidants that support cardiovascular health, as well as nutrients that help to regulate blood pressure and immune responses.

The immune system is the body’s first line of defense against disease causing pathogens, thus keeping it strong by following a healthy balanced diet, getting enough sleep, keeping stress in check, and being physical and with regular exercise is important to overall health in more than one way.
