Golden milk lattes are becoming increasingly popular. Despite being used for culinary and medicinal reasons for thousands of years in Ayurvedic healing practices turmeric/curcumin has only just started appearing in modern western society.

Turmeric has been shown to help reduce inflammation, but not all turmeric drinks are equal. Is it dried and ground or fresh? Then the choice of using milk or an alternative ways in, and let’s not forget that added sweeteners and how much of it that is used really factors in.

These lattes contain an ingredient that is energizing, which makes it great for a morning kick start, but if you want to relax, make sure that it does not have ginger as an ingredient as ginger is naturally stimulating.

To make a turmeric latte that can help you sleep keep it simple, in fact one of the easiest versions contains only 4 simple ingredients:

To make this you need your choice of milk or alternative, turmeric, black pepper, and cinnamon. Simply heat 8 ounces of your milk choice in a pot and add either 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric or 2 teaspoons of freshly grated turmeric root. Then add one quarter teaspoon of ground black pepper and one half teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Whisk the mixture vigorously until it is frothy and warm making sure to remove it from the heat just before it begins to boil to pour into a mug and enjoy, it is that simple.

All milk including alternatives contain natural sweetness which removes the need to add sweeteners. The black pepper has anti-inflammatory qualities which dissolve easily into the warm milk. Paired together black pepper and turmeric have been shown to work wonders as an anti-inflammatory and the pepper helps the turmeric be absorbed better. Cinnamon helps to soften the bite from the pepper and provides a warming sweet flavour. Feel free to use as much cinnamon as you like as it also has some impressive anti-inflammatory qualities and will have a positive effect to help you sleep.

Golden Milk Tea (remove the ginger for night time relaxing) :

2 cups unsweetened coconut milk; 1 tablespoon honey; 1 tablespoon grated or 1 teaspoon dried turmeric; 1 teaspoon grated ginger; one eighth teaspoon cardamom; dash kosher salt and a dash of black pepper. Combine all ingredients in a pot to simmer on medium heat stirring often. Remove from heat, cover and let stand for 5 minutes, then strain into mug discarding the solids and enjoy.
