Cheryl Myers, R.N., has also come to the conclusion of the Western world seeming to be in somewhat of a giant chemistry experiment with hormones poisoning our bodies causing havoc and causing an epidemic of obesity that is accelerating other diseases. She believes in bridging the gap between mainstream and integrative medicine to find ways to offset the ravages of aging, and as she explains it there are Blue Zones in this world where people live healthier and longer such as Okinawa, Sardinia, and Icaria.

“Recent science has debunked the notion that aging is inevitable and not within our control. In fact, nutritional elements can stimulate systems in the body that slow the aging process and restore more youthful functionality. But if you can't move to these prime locations where pollution is minimal and people eat real, minimally processed foods, you should tap into these three crucial pathways to slow down the aging process,” she says.

These 3 pathways she recommends tapping into to slow the aging process are: 1) Neutralizing free radicals that cause oxidative stress, damage DNA, and cause cellular mutations that lead to cancer, premature aging, heart failure, diabetes, asthma, and dementia. 2) Stopping inflammation that leads to premature aging and death. Doubling the levels of inflammatory compounds is associated with a 29% increase in heart failure according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. 3) Increasing detoxification as the liver loses ability to detoxify the body with age and certain medications which affect the liver’s ability to metabolize nutrients into antioxidants and rid the body of spent hormones, toxins, and other substances.

Certainly those areas in Japan, Italy, and Greece don’t have to be the only areas to experience a longer healthspan, maintaining a healthy lifestyle which includes regular physical activity and a healthy diet are the first line of defense in addressing these pathways, but adding certain nutrients to the diet can help to provide even more anti-aging benefits. Rather than searching for the elixir to youth Myers recommends trying glutathione, curcumin, and grape seed extract supplements to help revitalize and detoxify the body.

Glutathione enhances detoxification, neutralizes toxins, and helps to stop free radical damage to DNA, the body naturally makes this but production decreases with age; sublingual glutathione at 300 mg a day is typically the recommended dosage.

Curcumin helps to stop joint pain, reduces inflammation, and helps to shield the brain from oxidative damage, as well as boosting and protecting glutathione levels while blocking free radicals that are associated with aging. 500 mg of curcuminoids a day can help to keep both the body and mind healthy.

Grape seed extract has natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that will help to reduce free radicals, inhibit inflammation, and protect against glutathione depletion in brain and liver tissues; 400 mg of French grape seed extract in a tannin free and  OPC rich compound is recommended.

While aging is inevitable, how you age is largely within your control. Healthy aging involves reinventing yourself as needed to adopt new healthy habits, staying physically and mentally active, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and possibly taking supplements to give a little extra edge on aging.
