Vitamin D, Miracle Drug: Is It Science, or Just Talk?

Imagine a treatment that could build bones, strengthen the immune system and lower the risks of illnesses like diabetes, heart and kidney disease, high blood pressure and cancer.

Some research suggests that such a wonder treatment already exists. It’s vitamin D, a nutrient that the body makes from sunlight and that is also found in fish and fortified milk.

Yet despite the health potential of vitamin D, as many as half of all adults and children are said to have less than optimum levels and as many as 10 percent of children are highly deficient, according to a 2008 report in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

For those interested, what is the optimum level of vit d3, and how do we get there?
Based on some research that Ron rothenberg has shared, I try to have my patients attain a level of at least 50 and preferably 70.
I continue to check levels every 3-4 months until these levels are achieved.
I believe in loading doses of 50,000 iu weekly for 4-8 weeks for patients under levels of 30, or adding about 1000iu for very 10 we want to increase in terms of levels.
Anyone with other ideas or experience

I frequently recommend between a 1,000 and 5,000 IU vitamin D3 supplement to the majority of my patients who come in for nutritional consultations and whose test results suggest a deficiency. The exact dose depends on environmental and patient-specific factors. There is no one single amount that is perfect for everyone.
